Vox Tonelab Opinions Wanted

I'm thinking of snagging a desktop versionVox tonelab from e-bay to temporarily relieve my GAS, and add to my arsenal. I would like to hear opinions by those that have used or owned one. I've heard it nails the Brit tones very well, is this true?

Peace,
Dobb.

  • I just replaced my ToneLab (non-SE) with a Digitech GNX3000.

I DO think the ToneLab was awesome for cleans and slight breakup - probably even a little more \"tubey\" than the GNX, which many will find a plus. But I saw it more as \"different\" than \"better\". Because I like to layer several guitar tracks, REALLY clean sounds like a Roland JC120 often work better for me than, say, a Fender Twin. Also, the TL has a subtle high frequency \"raspiness\" in many patches that I'm not a fan of - but I think that might actually be accurate - my pal's real Twin Reverb had this, too!

Once you add more distortion, things even out. IMO the units are about even for crunchy sounds, and the GNX is better for heavy stuff. I didn't think I'd use those sounds much when I got the ToneLab, but after getting my GNX I have been - take THAT as you will... ;-)

If you could have both, I'd say having a TL around is a good idea. The same \"amps\" sound different on the 2 boxes, and I like the character of the TL on the Voxes & Plexis - I just wanted to simplify a bit...
  • Agreed. Both MFXs work great and sound different enough to give you a very broad palette of tonal color.
  • Dobb,

Go for a TCE G-System - that ought to take care of your GAS for a while.

Yeah, I'm thinking of upgrading from the G Major to the G System!
Dobb is looking amp modeling which the G System is not.
  • But he already has a GNX! He just wants to let out some GAS
  • Tonelabs are great for lighter, blues, classics, cleans, mild distortions.

    Don't rule out the Rocktron!!
  • Yeah, I think the Tonelab is the most 3d sounding of all the modelers available. To me, it is more of a preamp than a modeler as all of the amp models have a real similar tone. Also, as mentioned, for high gain stuff, it is a bit limited.
  • Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for your opinions, I think the tonelab might be the right chioce for me.

:P mfergel, I keep trying to find one on ebay, but they all have your name on them LOL!!!! :P

    8) g3456...Rocktron? which one...prophesy...please elaborate? 8)

God this place is fun sometimes, although I love it here, I fear (not) I'll never get rid of my GAS....

    Love,
    Dobb.

  • Dobb,

I was wondering if you went forward with the tonelab? I picked up a tonelabe se several months ago (have not been able to use it much yet as I was building a new music room). I love the overall tone compared to my GNX 3. There are not a many patches on their user forum yet.
