GNX4 or GNX3000

Well I searched around, read some reviews and have come to the conclusion that I am totally confused. :)

From what I gather, the GNX4 is more apt at recording yet the GNX3k has the better amp tones and such. I am looking for a unit to use for mostly home recording into Sonar 5. Some live work. My question is which one should I buy and is the GNX3K's models that much better and is the interface adequate for the home recording application?

  • I own the gnx4 finally got to try out the 3k yesterday. Its not a great big difference. I thought maybe the 3k was a lil muddier sounding on distorted patches if anything.

I record into Sonar 5, but plug directly into my soundcard from the gnx output. I propbably could have bought the gnx1 in retrospect.

Your probably gonna wanna use the usb output unless you have an upgraded soundcard in your computer. Either the 3k or the gnx4 can do this? I know the gnx4 can. Both have drums. Both would work great live.

FWIW, I don't think the gnx4 is necessarily more apt at recording. It has \"on-board\" recording, but if you are planning on doing most or all of your recording on the computer, the 3k is every bit as good. Personally, I chose the 3k because it is smaller (more portable), less expensive (doesn't have the on-board recording which I would never use anyway), and still offer's the convenience of hands-free recording on the computer. As for the amp tones, that solely needs to be your decision after playing both. 8)
  • If you're using Sonar 5, both units are equal for recording. I have both units. At first, I didn't think there was much difference in the sound quality, but after tweaking the 3000, there's no doubt that it sounds better. All I had to do was set the eq to brighten some of the stock patches to get a sound that I like. I can definitely hear a difference between the two units. Now I'd like to go back and re-record some of my old songs with the 3000.
  • The only advantage of GNX4 over GNX3000 for recording is the MIDI drum kits, GNX4 has eight of them. There's only one kit on GNX3000, but it sounds really nice, the sounds are like a real drumkit.

All other functions for USB recording are identical. Even the drivers are the same.

  • Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be picking up the GNX3K asap. I'm sure I'll have questions and possibly a few answers. Look forward to getting my grubby little mits on this monster.

As for onboard sound card would this Audigy2 be ok? I'b looked at some m_audio cards but does it justify the 150+ price tag. Im an audiophile at heart just not sure what purchases to justify.

    Thanks again.
  • GNX3000 is a soundcard and a MIDI interface. You don't need any other for your PC recording needs.

    Same with GNX4....
  • Another 1+ for the GNX4 is that the onboard CF card allows the downloading of MP3 backing tracks. Nice to have these on-board when there's no computer around.

  • Tyrant, in my opinion of the info. you gave us, the GNX3000 is the better choice for you ... but I would still think about things you'll be doing in the long run .. (eg. playing out live solo with backing tracks ... um GNX4 ... etc etc.)

Either way, you'll be happy with either unit I belive! :)
  • I like GNX4 better because I use the on board recorder a lot. I have the computer set up as well but I hate to turn it on each time I have some ideas to record and see how it sounds. I record to computer later if I really like it or need more tracks.
  • Pieces, that's usually my formula also.
  • Not a bad call there. I use the gnx 4 myself and as for the sound card. don't bother changing it if you can use the 3000 as the sound card then that will be sufficient i use the gnx4 for that and have no problems at all.
