First Attempt at Singing

Hi dudes, here's a tune I'm currently working on. It has my first ever attempt at singing. Still an undeveloped idea so far but I'm working on more lyrics etc. Let me know what you think, any constructive comments will be greatly appreciated.

  • I think the song over all is really good. Your singing is not bad @ all. However, I think all of the FX drown you out a bit. I can only understand a few of the lyrics. I particularly like the guitars and the drums.

What did you use for drums? Great arrangement. Keep on singing.

Only in the past few years have I actually started recording my singing. I sound OK in the car when singing to a song I am working on, but when I get in the front of the mic I all of sudden go tone deaf. It's all about confidence and mood. Even w/ my choirboy voice I can add some post FX that make it sound @ least tolerable (flange, etc.).
  • Vocals came out very well... 8)
Guitar playn' was dead on too..

    See Ya,

  • Hi,

Thanks for the comments dudes. Yeah I get what you mean about confidence when singing, I'm still cringing listening to my own voice. This tune is still a work in progress, but the posted one is the general idea. I used my Roland TD3KV electric drumkit for the drums. I recorded a basic chop with a fill and stuck to it. Once I have all the lyrics down I will re-do the drums and make them a bit more varied maybe.

  • ya I like it ty,
If you could get the vocal out front more -you know
also the flange sounded good but a little much ---but then it could be my junk speakers.
    good song
keep it up ty, oh and nice solo has a good FEEL to it.
  • Yeah, I'm not too sure about that myself. Still trying diffrerent ideas out. I'ts a slow rotary speaker effect from a Waves bundle I put on the picking track in pro tracks. I think I need to eq the vocals and bring up the treble and/or mids a touch as opposed to just adding volume as I want to hear the music.

  • nice work on this, gr8 mellow feel/ Try to get VOx out to front more as pointed out in an earlier post.

How did you record the VOX.....USing GNX3000?..Did you plug it into GNX3000 if so what Mic did you use etc?

    Good work
  • Hi,

vocals recorded direct into gnx4 with a sure sm58 mic.

  • Very good, recorded well, maybe i need a Shure MIc....hmmmm

good work , just bring VOX up a bit and repost mate
  • Hey Ty,
Alright, who is she, and what did she do to make you so sad
I have to agree with several of the responses above. On my stereo, I could barely hear the vocals. Instrumentally, it sounds great. Nice guitar tones and solo. 8)
  • Shando,
Vocals are very difficult to hear but I think I understand why it is so. I posted a song on this forum some months ago, named \"looking glass\", which too, was my first attempt at singing and my first recording.

First I tried FXs, because I didn't like my voice and tried to hide it.

...but then I decided that every vocal is unique on its own and even though I didn't like my vocals, I decided to take out all the effects etc and keep it the way it is, with only a slight delay and slight reverb. I think clarity is much more important. It turned out that even though I am not a super star vocalist , the song didn't sound as ear cringing as I thought it would be.

I listened to your vocals very carefully (very carefully!), and I think you don't need any FX, your voice has a nice color already.
Scrap the FX's and just sing it ... use the FX's sparingly at certain places to enhance the sound maybe...you know for a few seconds at bridnge or chorus maybe it's up to you.

Nothing ear cringing about your vocals, I bet it will be a very nice work when you sing naturally.

Instead of rotary speaker, why don't you try harmonized double vocals? Just sing a few more and layer them on top of each other. That'd be very cool!
  • Hey Shando, this song is sounding really good. I have to agree with everyone else with the effects on the vocals. Your singing is good and in tune so just just put on some reverb and maybe a touch of echo, and it should sound perfect. I suggest record it dry and add lexicon to it afterwards.

    Keep up the good work!
  • Thanks everyone for the input. I will re-record the vocals and put down all the lyrics I have so far and I think I will probably lose the rotary speaker effect on the guitar picking too. Hopefully this weekend if I have time.

  • 8) Right on some vocals! Grabbed your Jewz and decided to sing on this one  ...and you sound good too. :D Sounds strange to hear your own voice at first , but you get used to it and then start treating it like any other instrument you usually add to the mix. Dynamics are everything in vocals I think. IMHO Just cut the effects to get a cleaner signal and maybe add a bit more volume to your voice. sounds cool  I like the Guitar line as well.
