  • Back in my school days...79-83 I used a Fender Bassman a huge freekin thing (wish I had it now) it was the biggest amp we had so we ran guitars vocals you name it through that thing. a year or to after I had a Ampeg you flipped over the top to store the head part really cool sounding Amp. I ran through my white (Honer) les Paul through it ,really sounded fat. wish I still had that one too.
  • Kewl, the reason I'm asking is because I live in the Caribbean and bass is alot more popular out here than guitar, so you come across more bass amps in the shops. So I was thinking of buying a bass amp instead of importing a guitar amp and paying all kinds of import taxes. Squire guitars outhere cost around $500 US which is freakin crazy.
  • I used to run to a bass amp for stereo. Those were my pre-FRFR days.
  • I've seen quite a few guys with modelers using bass heads (SS rack type) like GK, Hartke, Behringer and others. Even with a guitar cab, the voicing of the bass amp eq fits many players better than guitar amps.
  • Thanks for the info fellas :D
  • Hey SlashNburn, what part of the caribean are you in?
I had the pleaseure of working for a few months on Grand Caymen,It was a freakin blast.
I also use a Bass cab for my guitar. Its an old Traynor 2x15,more of a mid/bass speaker in there, sounds ok to me,and thats all that really counts  .
  • Somebody please help,

Technically speaking, whats the difference between a Bass amp/cab and a guitar one ?
  • freq response is tuned by all components and Xovers. Think of a bose 901 with the little drivers.. most bass cabs (high power) do so by using a series of smaller frame drivers (PA type woofers), horns (certain models) and ports.. seems like a PA speaker, but tuned much lower, cabinets deeper, etc. Some of the best bass cabs use 10's instead of 15's but are very large and bulky. Using 10's can reduce weight and deliver the same punch. Ampeg proves this well!

Bass amps with horns are usually BI amped. They have seperate amps for LF and HF outputs. Others like AMPEG, tune the top drivers in the Xover. You'll seldom find a Xover in a guitar cabinet. Other guitar cabs are introducing 15's for low end response.. ie Scott Ian. So if you use a bass amp, you approach FR with really extended low end spl.
  • Hey P.G.Shadow,

I'm livin in Barbados moved here 2 yrs ago from UK.

It's cool, nightlife is awesome girls look good, the sea is great so far lovin it. :D
  • Thanks g3456,

Any graphs out there of Freq response of a Bass Amps and cabs versus Guitar amps and cabs ?
  • You'd have to look around. On many amps it won't help much since many bass players will often change drivers or cab types. Most guys I know dump the stock speakers for more efficient drivers. many of which are just the PA type LF drivers. EV drivers are very popular for their efficiency and clarity.
