Crush of love - working on bending technique

Here is my god awful improv solo over Satch's Crush of love. Lets get this straight now. I am and never will be Satch..I simply recorded it as part of my practice session so I can attempt to improve on my playing.

Anyway I am trying to get the bends right at beginning of solo and wanted some pointers. Remember my solo is just a little improv.

Any pointers or helpful advice needed guys

  • HEY MAC
i THINK IT IS JUST THAT YOU KEEP PRACTICING TIL YOU OWN A SONG

also you could try a diff song maybe a slower song ---something that you have to hold the bends w/vibratto --and as with all things on the guitar---the more you do it the more you feel it and the more you feel it the better you are

just keep on and you will BE BETTER
good job Ilove that satch guys playin
    so much feeling
  • thx man, that is good advice for everyone

\"practice till you own the song\"

I like that. As I mentioned earlier I will keep recording my practice sessions so I can improve.

I may run them past you guys at times for feedback.

    I appreciate it guys
  • macman, first, cool tone a good cutting sound with creamy edges (Satch like if that’s ok) and your playing is clean. you've achieved pleasing results.

then... something I just picked up on the forum regarding bending accuracy (sounds simple, but it's helped a lot). Bend the string to the intended tone then play the actual note on the fretbord. In other words if you hoped to bend up 2 then do the bend, then fret the note two up on the fretboard and see how close you came. I made up a little drill where I shoot for a note and then check my accuracy. It seems to have helped train my ear and my fingers some.

ok, there you have it. I've managed to used dozens of words to describe a ten word concept. Hoped that was worth reading
  • thx scott

gr8 advice I will practice using this technique you suggested. It will help give my work a more professional sound. Then I can build the speed in.

I don't want to go racing all over fretboard if my notes sound out of tune nin first place.

Thx for feedback. I recorded using the Zakkattack patch just added on more delay. Do you think i need to use a patch with more gain to record this solo or will I lose the cutting thru effect?

    cheers macman
  • macman,

Listening to\"Always with you...\" as I alternately listen to your tone. They are very close. Perhaps to close for me to give advice with my 'layman’s ears'. If you were looking for Satch's tone i.e. \"Always with you...\" then you've gotten very close.

I find when listening my attempts at various covers that less gain is sometimes the answer as more gain seems to run notes together. If what you're playing requires fidelity to enhance nuance (and I think that is the case with Satch's mellow pieces) then I would say less is more.

Listening again now, you are so close. In fact perhaps already there.
  • Try some Gary Moore, but I think your only prob is not letting the material sink in fully when learning. As I said yesterday and someone said earlier you need to know the tune insideout. 8)

I find it best to learn using a clean tone or unplugged then kick in the distortion when I know the material.
  • thx Slash

I will make some coffee tonite and start the learning, gr8 advice man
  • No Worries m8, happy learning :)
  • I couldn't get it to play. I joined that other comm so I could play it but it said thier was unexpected data or something.
  • hey mac , you're doing great and I think you gotta keep on workin at it.
The bending still needs some work -- maybe off some semi tones or something---have you tried what jscott was saying @ bending a note and then fingering the note that you're trying to acheve---It really is a good teq to get you to where you want to go.
    rock on
  • thx man, i am gonna have bender session this weekend and nail em....oooh missy

    I'll be back
  • also we are all used to it with the wah...let me record it with wah, that may help the bends and tonality of mine some
  • 10-4 BRO
    GO ON A BENDER!!!
  • Nice job on the song Macman. Nice tone too.
Some guitars are a lot easier to bend strings on. Ibanez in peticular like Satch uses. Also the finger strength required for big bends won't develop overnight no matter how many times you attempt. Make it part of your practice routine and it will come over time.
  • good point. I used an OLP Luke to do this. Fairly cheap guitar but I like it. I had an Ibanez RG guitar once and I believe strings were easier to bend on that.

Atleast my OLP Luke is making my technique improve.

How are Epiphone LP's for bending strings etc?
  • Have a nice bending session. I think you are almost there, the second post was better. Speaking of bending, I hear from my friends that \"Ernie Ball slinky\" string sets are easier to bend. I haven't tried myself but I'll try them next time I go for shopping. I have no practice at all at bending so good luck to you
