Tokai ?
I am thinking of moving up from my Tele Guitar
I have the chance of buying 2-3 guitars from TOKAI in Japan at about 40% less than list.
Anybody here know more about TOKAI ? Comments on their quality ?
Any comments on Les Paul versus SG versus Strat to play Rock/Blues ?
Some say that Strats are good for rock but Eric Clapton plays blues on them. Some say Les Paul is great for Blues but Slash plays rock on them. I want to play both !

ive no direct experience of tokai but ive heard the quality is exceptional and sometimes as good, if not better than gibson = that's the word on the street anyway.
i have a les paul and i tried the sg before i bought it. both guitars are great - they both can do nice cleans and mellow stuff as well as blues and rock/metal. the sg has more access to the higher notes on the neck and is lighter. I preferred the feel, look and sound of the les paul.
the strat is something im working towards - all the ygwie j malmsteens/ritchie blackmoore/jeff beck/hendrix type people will say its a great rock guitar - but you need humbuckers for metal really (consider a 'fat' strat - iron maiden use them), the benefit of the strat is its trademark \"out of phase\" quacky sound on poisitions 2 and 5 - the strat has TONS of tones available it has a really 'trademark' sound and a lot of variation.
really you need a start AND a Les Paul......and a jem (wich can also get some strat type tones because of the single coil in the middle position), and probably a jackson or esp with emgs...and a martin acoustic...etc..
OR get a pacifica 112 and upgrade the pickups - its a nice guitar and very cheap.
darn = there i go again, speaking as if i know what im talking about ! doh!
In my best cockney accent .. and with real due respect.....(and no harm only humour intended)
I agree with all of your post..... but as an answer to the origin of the thread.... what you mean in short is ... you need one of everything!!
Like monty Python's Life Of Brian at the stoneing...Bwaaa Haaa Haa...
I'lll have two small ones...one large one, an a bag of gravel,..........................Bwaaaaa haaaa Haaa. Two small Gibbies, one Stratty an a PRS for good luck to finish him offf.
There i go.... tryin to be funny again...
Cheers mate
I've heard and loved your music.
Yeah, I agree with Archon. I have a LP style guitar and a superstrat type guitar and I really couldn't say which I prefer. I play both as much as each other and not one more than the other. Sometimes I'll be fidling around on the LP and think what I need is a single coil sound and vice-versa. I've heard that Tokai make great guitars too. Check out the reviews of their guitars here:

PS. Where are you getting the Tokai with 40% off and what non poltical/religious posts you had locked on this forum?
He posts on another Rockman/Boston forum so I had this link.
This ? has been asked before nobody seems to want to take my advice. So this the last time I give it. If you want to play Hard rock, Rock, Metal, Blues. than the SG Is your guitar.
Don't get me wrong I love my studio but feel more comfortable thrashing on the Sg I guess i am probaly wanting to preserve the Lp I have alot $ in to it. Weather you want to shredd or just bang away on single strings blues style Its the SG for sure .
Pick or choose. Angus Young of AC DC as you well know has always used a SG. his guitar back ground Jazz and blues and of course rock.
Slashes back ground blues guitar / rock guitar/ although I have seen Slash play other guitars with Velvet Revolver other than Lp's but alwaws Gibson
Please dont take my word for it go to a music store and decide for your self. dont get the epi Sg as you'll be better off spending $689.00 for the real deal it's the least expencive SG you will find new.
I hope this helped you.
\"FOREVER LOVE IT LOUD.\"
COMBODRIVE.
Is it hard to reach the high frets on a Les Paul ?
Are Set Necks really that bad ? I see that some manufacturer's Set Neck version is actually more expensive than the Bolt on version of the same Guitar.
I noticed this thread is double thread I posted in the other one. Anyhow poeple talking about the need of multiple guitars, well maybee for some that gig, record cd's etc... this might be true. But I can tell you of a very Shred Worthy Versital awsome looking, sounding and playing as well even with more of a strat neck than the Wizard II neck on my RG 470: The answer Japanese Team J Craft JS1000BP prestige Ibanez Joe Satriani Signature. For around a $ 1000 bucks you will be amazed at this guitar the tonal versatility is just awsome!!! With GNX4 and MFX Supermodels Name the artist I bet you could pull it off with this awsome guitar I just Love it!!!! Anyhow worth a look or a play at guitar center!!! You won't be disipointed!!!!
high notes on the les paul are accessipl - but some bands use REALLY high notes = like metallica, kirk hammet's solo's are sorund 19/20/ ang higher. This is 'tres' difficult on a les paul. but ;ed zeppelin/clapton/GnR stuff is ok.
I think you should get a fat strat with a coil tapped humbucker in the bridge. The yuou can get all the humbucker/single coil tones you want in one guitar - and the neck is more open than an LP.
Man Web Surf...
That Gibson VS. Fender thing has been going around since I was a young man..
(That was a long time agao)..
You'll find guys that will debate you to death on both sides..
Just play both (the LP, and the Strat) and let your mind, fingers, and heart decide. 8) .
Boy I'm a lot of help huh..
Whatever you decide enjoy your new axe.. 8) .
See Ya,
Tal. 8) ..
I am now very clear in my thinking after reading all the posts !!!
I will get a Fat Strat and then I will be able to get all the Single Coil and HB sounds that I need.
But an offer to get a TOKAI at 40% off is too good to resist, So I will also get an SG.
And why not a Les Paul at the same time, the customs clearance charges are the same for one guitar or two.
Or I might just scrap the whole idea above and just get a Variax.
Or, new idea, why not all the above and a Variax as well !!!
Well, I guess I really am as confused as ever, The only things I know to be true are --
A) A new guitar purchase will not magically make me a better guitarist overnight
C) Everything gets more expensive with time, It might be best to just go ahead and buy what you think you want in the near future right away. The TOKAI 2006 price list is already 10% up in Yen terms than their 2005 one.
How true your are man!!! A new guitar will not magically make you a better player. But I can honestly say that my JS1000 sure helps!!! I'm amazed at some of the tones and things that come out of my little Fender Pro JR home , and Marshal MG30 monitor at Church!!! This guitar in my opinion has made me a little better player (maybee thats not extremely hard at me current Level) But some times I'm amazed at the sound comming out of the amp, the new inspiration I have to try and do new things!!! I'm like wow is that me?? Anyhow Like I said I think this guitar is just truly amazing!!!! I played Les Pauls 2 I think?? Start One I think?? Anyhow I think all those tones and variations can be had with 1 very nice extremely well built and awsome looking guitar for around $1000 bucks and the J craft case you get to house this awsome guitar is pretty cool as well. Anyhow wether or not you trust my opinion or not Check it out you might be suprized at what you can get in one very nice guitar!!!!
