Question for G3456

I have a Marshall 2204 50 watt JCM 800. I have a groove tubes high gain kit. Is the phase inverter tube the one closest to the power tubes on that model?

Thanks for your help.

  • For USA models V3 is next to (L of ) the 6550's.

If you don't get good results from GT, try JJ's or Svetlena's.
  • It is a 1987 and has EL34's in it. I believe the power amp and preamp has EH's. They actually sounded pretty good. I have yet to try the GT's. Supposedly with the high gain kit, they match the preamp tubes with the phase inverter tube for 10 to 20% more gain. We'll see. I wanted to make sure the phase inverter tube was in the right place before I tryed it.

Here is an interesting site that has just about everything you want to know about tubes amd a lot of other stuff. That's where I learned about the high gain kit. http://www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/index.html
  • V3 is still the same position even with as many output tube variations. The phase invertor can bring more gain, but not as much as the inline mod. I can only tell you that not as many techs or musicians have had as good as luck with GT. matched preamp tubes ? I can see output matched but it really won't make a difference on preamps V1 or V2.

What others have done is try to sub the AX7 with AT7. Some others set the bias with the AT7 before they put the orig 12ax7 in the socket. Give it a shot and see if you like it. JJ's seem to hold up best for as many as we have serviced. Thanks for the link
