I did my best with this one. It proved to be very difficult. Eric Johnson plays this one with pick, finger, and feet. It's like gymnastics for the guitar. Eric plays sections with non-alternating pick stroke (upward picking only). He says that this is to get even tone between notes. He points out that when you alternate picking stroke (up and down) that the pick rotates a bit and the upstroke sounds different than the downstroke.

Eric also plays with fingers and pick at the same time. This part wasn't that hard because I played classical and flamenco guitar for a period of time.

Then he does these hammered/harmonic chords... which I can't manage to pull off.

His fingers fly up and down and across the fretboard while he tapdances on his homemade pedal board switching between amps and effects. I didn't even bother to try switching between distorted and clean sound. I'm still working on that. Every time I tried I found myself too distracted and messed up the fingering even worse.

Give me a break. I mean, it's like trying to pat your head, rub your stomach, yodel, and riverdance... all at the same time ! and somehow manage to make it sound good !

So, feel free to tear this one apart... bad phrasing... bends not pitched just right... worng notes... wrong chords... yep !

The only thing I'm really happy with on this one is the patch I created for it. I haven't gotten to the distorted tone patch yet. When I do and can coordinate it with my playing I might repost this... if anyone wants the patches let me know.

Now, off to bed !

  • WOW !....add 10 points for technical difficulty factor (those chords 1/3 of the way in) ...I'm not an Eric Johnson fan , but this was GREAT....(deduct 2 points for failure to include direct link to said song in your post...for us lazy people)
  • I could barely bring myself to look at replies... Thank you for the positive response !

Maybe I can get those 2 points back. Here's the link.

It'd be nice it there was a way to do this automatically...
  • Very, very nice..
    Man I dig it....
    Nice tone, great chops...
    Post some more good DR...
  • Nice job. are you playing on a strat? You got his tone down pretty good on this one. I bet Eric Johnson is playing on a 2k+ strat which makes fingering all those funky things a helluva lot easier.
  • WOOOOO! That is awesome. Man you could not tell me that is not Eric Johnson. The quality of this recording and playing is professionally.
Will you be posting the patch?
  • Thank you both !

Actually it's a Gibson. I just turned on the single coil pickup emulation and tweaked the settings till I came close to the tone. I'm still working on it to get the effects set right. I haven't been able to get the right delay setting yet.

I'm still working on the distorted sound. GNX4 isn't quite as punchy as real tube amp.

And, I have to say that Live is awesome. I tried recording this with Deck (cause I didn't have the hang of Live) and it keeps popping and garbling the recording about 30 seconds into it. Recordiing this song actually pushed me to finally sit down and figure out Live. It was well worth it. Live is much better ! No pops or dropouts or distortion. Wish I could say the same for my backing track. :)

I can post the patch, though had some trouble with compatability on the last patch that I posted.

I'll put it up later tonight. Let me know if it works for you guys.
  • <div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>That was really good!

The sound you got for this was excellent!! Sounded just ike EJ. shock

Please post the patch. I am curious if this will get the same error as the other patch.

Keep em coming.. maybe we could here something in DR Mike's playing style as well.

  • OMGoodness, Dr.Mike that was excellent, that's all I can to say. It's going on to computer for daily\\weekly listening. :D
  • Wow. I'm really humbled by the positive response this has received. Thank you !

I will post the patch soon. I want to try and set it up for the lead tone he uses. I meant to do it last night but was a little burnt after work.

Hopefully this one will work. I'm still not certain what happened with the Satriani patch I posted.
  • Most Grande tone! :D very cool would love the rythm patches too.
  • That was really very nice, I am not familiar with Eric J. but after this song I thought I should become familiar , and fast! so I'll be ordering some CDs
Really enjoyed it a lot. Congrats
  • I really enjoyed that - it is now part of my favourites playlist. Very nice tone, good production, great balance. Thanks.
  • Very nice considering the degree of difficulty. Nice job of emulating EJ's tone. Overall really good job.
  • I listen to my stuff and I like it... Even after all these years I'm still so pleased when other people like it.

    Thank you !

Riffmaster - Ooh ! You said the \"n\" word ! \"NICE\" *feigning a knife in the chest* Just kidding. I'm realistic. I know there are mistakes... maybe even a little more aware of them than other people. Some of the things that I think ended up sounding good weren't intentional. Some of the things that were intentional did not end up sounding good. Both of these things are helpful for me to recognize and learn from.
  • I've posted the patch. Please let me know what you think.
  • Abysmal, I say to the good \"DR\" - physician heal thyself!
