New fiddle ...riddle

Hey guys thanks for all the great feedback. I playedem all this weekend. It was very hard to Choose. ... for some reason (money vs quality) I really like the higher end Epi's these days

I had my heart set on this beeyootifool grey Epi Lespaul. That is until I picked up this SG. I had to have it.

The SG for me was a way more versital (and lighter) tone machine. The pups on this fiddle are amazingly hot . As great a blues guitar as it is a rawker.
Its a funky model though... I cant seem to find specs on it. It looks just like the Elite series exactly exept for the bigger pickguard it has...also on the back of the headstock right obove the neck is a small round painted logo that says \"Epiphone limited edition proshop\". None of the others SGs had this on the back of the headstock. I went to the epihone websight and could not find the exact model. The \"Elitist 61 SG standard looks just like it except for the pickgaurd mine has the a full black pickgaurd not the smaller one. The guy said the GC was one of the only stores that carry that edition... well I gotta know more about whats up with the proshop logo on the back. Anybody Know whats up with that ... if its a good thing. and if so whats the diffrence other than the fact it cost a bit more than the others and plays and sounds just a bit Sweeeter! any clues as to what the proshop stamp is about would be cool 8)

Thanks again for all your help in making my choice I played so many awsome guitars and I found one to fit my finaces as well as my taste
I am currently \"homeless\" right now  we are staying with the folks untill we can move into our new home next month. So I will have to wait to record any new tunes with it . I can't wait to crank it up a bit in the new house and pi$$ off all my new neighbors.

  • Just curious, did you not try out one of the $650 Gibson SG's? Seems like the Gibson would be a better deal than the epi at that price point. Of course not allways the case with varaition in production quality and maybe that epi is something very special considering it's rareity.
  • Hey DGF, nice to hear from ya. :) Yea I tried the enty level faded series($650 no case). I must admit part of me just wanted that GIBSON name on the headstock  The frets on the faded gibsons I played (2) were a bit rough and I was not impressed with the quality vs price either. This EPI SG (500 with case) had a way better finish as well as finer details like the inlay work in the neck and head stock . It has a set neck that was just sweet and grovers as well. The faded glory series were seemed to me lacking in detailed craftmanship. The inlays work what little there was disapointed me a bit sloppy for a gibson I thought. The pups on the gibsons were great though. I didn't want to get caught up in the fancy labels like I used to. I just wanted a fun affordable quality made fiddle and the Epi SG for a $150 less had what I was looking for this time around.

Oh yes...one fine day I will find the Gibson of my dreams. But like my other buddys I will probabley be too lame to pull it out of the closet and take it to practise. It will be a studio guitar that rarley gets a real workout due to the investment I will have to make.
This SG I think is a real player, and I wont have to worry about it so much when I take it to gigs. Thats not to say I wont come unglued if my buddys ding it ...but at least I won't have to Kill them :!:  :lol:
  • I love Gibson, but I have to admit that Epi is making some fantastic guitars these days. I own an LP from Epi which I highly modded and I like the way it sounds, feels, and plays better than my $1800 classic. I wouldn't give up either one, but I find when I reach for an axe, I pick up the Epi more often. A few things though with Epi is the strap buttons tend to come loose, easy fix, the pots are cheap, easy fix, the bridge is so/so..gibson is better there, and the switch will get scratch very easy. I also didn't like Epi's stock PUPs, so I put in SD's. Still I got the Epi for $460, it's a standard plus with the flametop, and another $250 in upgrades and WOW! It's a pro level axe.
  • I always wanted a Gibson too. My buddy lent me his SG one summer I still remember how cool that guitar was. I was Bon/angus that year. 8)

I think the first thing I get will have to be strap locks. I can just tell this thing will hit the floor without them. :(
  • Epiohones are fantastic for the prices. I have one myself, an Epiphone SG Custom. I love it, of course not as good as the Gibson version, but for $500 it was well worth the money.
  • Hey ODanny, I was down at the music store today, and I asked the \"riddle of the fiddle\" and got a couple of possible answers...one,It could be made korea instead of china,Or,and this is the one I think you have, only because you said\"Epiphone limited edition proshop\"is that for a very short period of time,Epiphone was allowed to put Gibson pup's in there guitars,as well as other little differences. If it is this one 8) ,you might have a keeper
Hope that helps, and remember,it's just hear say
  • Quick way to find out on the PUP's is next time you change strings or feel like doing some checking around, pop them out and check and see what it says on the bottom of the PUP. If it's Epi, it will say along with a small white sticker for use and who inspected it. It it's Gibson, it will say Gibson USA. Also, the guitar should have a small white sticker usually on the back of the headstock indicating where the unit was made, China or Korea. A lot of people say the Korean models are better made, but I haven't found any difference in the two.
  • Hey guys thanks for checkin. I took it over my most execellent friend and guitarist Paul F. He worked at music stores for 10+ years, (he also helped me pick it out.) Its a Korean model by the way . He set it up so sweeet and plugged it in through a hotrod deluxe and Holy Shite its got great tone. So I am happy with the find I made at GC. As for the Pro shop logo he says thats just a dept that the more experianced guys work in and get to put there logo on the back of there work. thats cool. he says the american shops do that too. Man these Koreans are getting pretty good at makeing guitars these days its way better than my old korean epi I hated the pups in that one.I may upgrade if I get a wild hair but for now It rocks just fine!

Thanks for lookin guys you RAWK!!

    you mean angus/malcom?
  • \"Epiphone\" is made by Samik. \"Samik\" makes everything, most of the better Ibanez, soon to make Squier strats......... over the last 10 yrs I'd say most guitars not \"Handmade in the USA\" stamped or stickered, where made by Samik,Cort or Yamaha.

Same for Drums, Mapex makes 98% of the drums on the Market.

they will put YOUR NAME on them if you buy enough, with any specifications you ask for
  • Wow, i didn't know that about the Squier$. It's about time they did somthing. Haven't picked up a decent one since production left Japan.
B.T.W. Luared is 100% correct if it sounds good it was probably made by one or two huge factories in Korea or (now China also).
You can also pick up these house brands a lot cheaper. Un-pure, anti something, somthing? Well thats an argument i won't get into

P.S. has anybody ever played a decent guitar that was made in Indonesia? I have not and this is why i have not bought a Squi#e since the 80's. (just wished i'd kept the last one)
  • I haven't that I know of, got sum funny repair stories of them though....
  • How do you repair an Indo guitar? Maybe better fo a different thread.
  • thehootman:
    you mean angus/malcom?

Actually no... Bon/Malcom would be more like it cause I usually just grab the groove on guitar and always get stuck singing too. :P
I think I did a pretty cool Bon Scott (jailbreak) or at least after a few shots I used to think so. used to be the show closer for the band back in the 90's  Man I remeber when he died...It $ucked! He was a great hard rock/blues singer for me right up there with Mr.Tyler, but with his own gig completely. So much charm in his voice. There I go again all hero worshiping  Must ...not ....kneel in front of my rock and roll alter...again ....not worthy. ..not worthy

\"But he made it out...with a ...bullet in his Back!\"- Bon Scott

I had know Idea that 1 guitar shop made all those diffrent brands ...thanks for enlightening us. Now I want a custom 0dannyboy gretch just like malcoms...I would have to order what 500 or so guitars?
  • Hey Danny how's the new Epi working out? I own a bunch of Korean guitars (too many actually) and just bought another one. A Jay Turser 12 string acoustic. Jay Turser is one of those examples of \"if you buy enough of them they'll put your name on it\". I don't know who Jay Turser is / was but i do know that the company has sold a hell of a lot of guitars here in the last 5 years. I'm pretty sure that these guitars and the one you just bought come from the same factory, if this is true i could easily see why that is the one you chose.

  • Hey Danny how's the new Epi working out?

Hey D. Whats up? The new Epi is breaking in just fine. After I drop it a couple of times and slam it in the car door it will look a bit more luved and fit in with the rest of my stuff.

Marketing in the guitar world is so competitive...and most overseas models are made in the same factory  ...that blows me away...
makes me think I did the right thing by choosing playability over brand name hype. The USA made stuff was definaltey 1 knotch above in quality...but 2 knotches above in price...will have to step up next year and
get a real USA made fiddle. Just cause I havent owned one in a long time.
shopping for guitars is an addiction :P and a lot of fun too. I can see why you have so many  I think I need 3 or 4 now.8)
  • ODB, hope you enjoy the the new guitar for a long long time! :D

One of my \"dream\" guitars is the Gibson SG Supreme, with the split diamond on the head. Preferably the green one, to match our color decor at the church where I play.

    Well take care and enjoy

GC has this awsome 62 reissue I would love to own.

What got me into SGs again was my Buddy Paul F. handed me a 61 SG He is handleing for a friend. It says Les Paul on the neck and has a prototype whammy bar that is original from the factory and not widely distributed. they settled on another desighn I think he said. anyway he wants over 5 grand for it. He plugged it into a hotrod deluxe and the awsome blues tones were freekin staggering...someday my friend someday  untill then thanks to my cool find I can get some cool tones that a least remind me of the real deal.
  • ODB...

You'd look awesome with one of these....

  • Ednrg..

I have got to get me one of those...:lol::lol:
  • I used to have a prostetic leg PINK Japstrat  When I started playing ( 2 years ago) again after about a 5 year break and I didn't own a guitar to jam with. My buddy lent me one of his guitars, it was awsome but I could not grab enough inner-manley-fortitude to play it live  broke down before we actually had to play a gig and went for the toned down tabaco sunburst right away  now after a while the scarres have faded and I have a Cherry finish on my latest fiddle. :P

Maybe if I were in twisted Sister I could get away with that
