GREG HOWE SOUND

Does anyone has a patch for the GNX3000 that will give me the GREG HOWE sound like he has on INTROSPECTION first tune JUMPSTART?

Comments

  • Didn't he use a J-Station in those days?
  • a j-station????
no idea of what it is....:-)
  • A 2 second search on google gave me this:

    http://www.johnson-amp.com/jstation.htm

After looking over their patch library, a familiar name was noticed as a submitter.
  • I apologize
What are u trying to say??
Can you help me out getting that sound?
  • J-station is the prequel to Genesis. I know Greg Howe was a big Johnson user at one point. But then I realized that album was recorded before J-stations came out...
  • do you know of any presets for the gnx3000 to get something similar to that sound....?
  • have u tried it, does it sound similar?
  • Holy Moley... Tweak the GNX3K for crying out loud. That's what it's for  It's for modeling, so use it for what it was meant for. Seriously, not trying to be a dickhead, but why buy a modeler if you won't spend the time tweaking it to get the sound that you want???
  • LMAO - you can write dickhead without getting ****purple elephant**** substitute!!! COOL!!! :P

Well said, and about time too.

    :lol::lol:
  • I haven't \"tried it\".... I made it up. It's one of the thousands of sounds GNX makes possible that is similar to the Greg Howe sound. I was playing through neck humbucker and using XLR->mixer->headphones with SC OFF to monitor.

I opted for a more tubey sound, and add the relative \"flatness\" of his tone with chorus instead. This way, I can use the volume control to add some gain for the squeals. Another option would be to get more of an SS sound with the amp model. Try others too, maybe one of the bassmen on a clean setting will do the trick.

The chorus adds a lot to the sound, widening it. If you're trying to record, you may want to turn down the chorus (again note I was using headphones so not much natural chorusing there). The delay is timed to the tempo of Jump Start, retap it if you want a longer/shorter delay. Reverb is more or less optional, I'd keep it low but try whatever.
  • Can someone play my guitar for me? I downloaded the patch above. Now, I get the perfect Greg Howe sound, but I just can't play like Greg Howe. Please don't tell me to practice. I know that route. I want it, and I want it now!!!! I don't want to learn the intricate workings of the GNX nor the guitar.

:D  :D  :D  :D
  • you guys are sooooooooooo funny....well so that you know I am a GIT graduated, studied with Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai and Frank Gambale....I just tweaking these things around to get sounds, I just thought maybe someone had it down already...that's it!!!!!!
  • Does anyone have a good Air Guitar patch. I just can't seem to get it dialed in right on my 3k.
  • Giulio - please try the patch and let me know what you think. It'd be nice to get some sound-designing discussion going here, and we need to build up the patch library for GNX3000 for users that have yet to join the community.

Glp - post that air guitar patch when you find it.

Ednrg - I think Giulio is your man! I certainly can't play like Greg Howe.
  • I'm surprised that you're not famous. You already have the rock star attitude.

I can't play like Joe Satriani doesn't stop me from wanting to sound like him.... 8) 8)
  • I'm self-taught, play like crap, but I know how to dial in a tone

Hey, it's half the fun. That's the POINT with modelers - TO TWEAK!!! Sorta like buying a synthesizer and only use the presets

Anyway, best place to look for patches are in the patch area. Dunno what they have for G3K, but really, if someone is a GIT GRADUATE!!! Then I would assume the person would have the right set of ears to dial a tone...

    My 2¢...
  • maybe You guys want to know why Iam no struggling tweaking this beast around....ok here we go....I was the happy user of a digitech 2120 for years, Knew that thing inside out, it suddendly broke on me and of course the digitech techs in my country said it couldn't be fixed..so I had to run out and buy something, that's where I ended up with the 3k. Now I spend my time playing with bands and recording as a studio musicians with my boss pedals, that's why I'm asking for help, do not have a rock star attituted, I wouldnt be here asking for help if I did, dont you think?????
However I tried the patch and It had no distortion at all..(maybe I did something wrong), I added a little distortion here and there and its getting close, however still far away from that sound.....:-)))
  • It will depend on what you're listening through, to an extent. I actually thought there was a bit much distortion in the red channel, which is why i suggested to use a 6-7 volume on your guitar. Also you have to realize that there was probably some master compression and eq in the mix, so the tone won't sound identical in either case. You can of course vary the degree of distortion.

As far as having trouble tweaking, I think it's the amp modeling that's unusual, quite different from 2120 as far as that goes. I would peruse some of the available discussions on the subject, particularly paying attention to Guitar3456 post (do a search) - he's gone most in-depth with analyzing the modeling, as far as I can tell.

My basic suggestion is to think of everything before EQ as a floor effect/stompbox, and everything noise gate and forward as a rack effect. So you have a wah, a compression, and a distortion stomp (also IPS if you want). That goes into the amp (model), after which immediately passes through the EQ and noise gate. From there, the signal is split in stereo to modulation, delay, and reverb. That's your basic GNX framework, since you can't arrange the order of effects.

Let me try a different approach, maybe I'll get closer. I'm curious myself how to get it. You have any idea what setup he's using on that album? I can't find the CD box, and his web site is far from useful for that kind of information.
  • Unfortunately the cd box doesnt seem to explain his setup..all I know is that he was using a fender strat on that tune..........thank buddy your help is very useful and appreciated, I will do my best to learn this beast.......
as far as buying another 2120 I wish I'd found one.....:-)))
  • well so that you know I am a GIT graduated

I gradgiated in too high skool! :D
