  • well - if you want 'modern' and 'living' id have to suggest Jack White from the White Stripes = i always liked the band but didnt rate him as a player till a freind of mine played me a live dvd at blackpool where he blew me away with a version of Sunn House's \"Death Letter\" - electric slide whammy pedal carrrrayzzeeenesss!!!

i dont remember sunn house sliding around on his knees in front of the monitors though.
  • Well - let's see...

There are the standard Blues greats: SRV, Clapton, Winter, Jimmy Vaughan, Hendrix, TBone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and BB King.

But I'd add Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayer, and Satriani can do a mean little blues shuffle anytime too.

    Hrm - I guess I don't have a short list at all! ;)
  • And one highly underrated living legend to rule them all, (strictly my opinion for a score of reasons), Tony T.S. McPhee of the Groundhogs.
I could go on for days about Tony, but if you are interested, here is his site.

  • Archon, I'll have to go search out Jack White, to be honest I have never heard of him. But then there are hundreds and hundreds I've never heard of.

I looked at the Tony McPhee sight, I'll have to check some record shops at the flea markets and such.

Kewlpack, yes Robert Cray is a genius. I watched the PBS televised Crossroads concert from Dallas, this summer and he makes it look too easy. I hope Kenny Wayne Sheppard lives up to his initial burst into the blues world. I think he is just coming out of re-hab, isn't he? What about Johhny Lang? John Mayer played at the Crossroads concert and was pretty impressive too.
  • Other current living blues guitarists woth listening to:

    Joe Bonamassa
    Sonny Landreth
    Walter Trout
    Eric Sardinas
  • just how short? gary moore, peter green, roy buchanan and danny gatton

    how's that?
  • Do they have to be living? If not, what about the late Rory Gallagher?
  • I think the dead guys rule! maybe just out of respect !
But no one has every played like MR Buchanan

Master of the Telecaster: Roy Buchanan

    early electric inovator: Guitar Slim

oh so tasty Clarence \"Gatemouth\" Brown
  • Albert Cummings....this guys ROCKS as a current blues great. I saw him a few months ago...kinda like Stevie Ray...go to his sight...www.albertcummings.com
  • For just getting back to the roots ala Robert Johnson, Son House, etc.. for a living blues guy Keb Mo is hard to beat. and let's not forget Bonnie Rait, I could listen to BB for hours as well. Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy

    For those that have passed.

Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy, Roy Buchanan, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin Hopkins.. Lot's of cats, I'll stop here..

    See Ya,
    Tal
