Say Goodbye - Everyone should see this.

Say goodbye to your favorite tab sites. The MPA is trying to put a ban on tabs.

Quote - Ian Youngs BBC News: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm
The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics.

The Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents US sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006.

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed.

He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were \"completely illegal\".

Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can \"throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective\".

Im glad I started guitar when I did because its going to be hard for beginners if they ban tabs. You can always bye tab books but they are usually expensive and internet is so much easier. Enjoy your tabs sites while you still can.

Btw, powertabs.net wont allow you to download tabs anymore unless the creator wrote the song himself.

I doubt they will get away with this but just incase, enjoy your free tabs while you can.[/url]

  • They have already done it once!! Does anyone remember OLGA?

In any case, stock up on all the tabs you can find.
  • I remember Olga. I went to highschool with her. Shes responsible for this? I never did like that girl.

J/k, I havent heard about that. When was it?

I dont use tabs much. I figure alot of stuff out by ear. If this happens, I am going to make good use of the Learn A Lick on my GNX.
  • That was back in 97/98... The shut down the whole OLGA repository (back then it was just ascii tabs)... but mirrors started surfacing over the place.
  • Whatever will they do next, make it illegal to sing or hum along to someone else's tune without paying a fee!!! Surely by putting tabs out the artist's work will get wider recognition and possibly result in more sales etc.

    TY

  • Looks like OLGA is still working :) You can even add an OLGA search engine to your Firefox toolbar! Here

Maybe all the tabs will end up on ThePirateBay.org-none of the big guns have been able to shut them down yet... Unfortunately you can't always trust files from those types of places.

I wonder what the standard prison term is for transcribing a piece of music? I can imagine the jail cell conversation now:

    \"Whattya in for buddy?\"
\"Oh, I tabbed out the intro to Panama right after I ripped the tag off my mattress\" 209116.gif

    Sheesh
  • Oh we may laugh, but it's the other criminals we come into contact with by associating with the evil tabbers. I used a tab from MX Tabs last week and the next thing I know I'm now a smack addict, pushing crack to schoolkids, sending my missus out to turn tricks and running guns for terrorists. Dammit, do you know how many good and decent friends I've lost to Tabbers? It's the next generation I worry about. What bloody chance in life have they got with so many Tab sites around?
  • lol shando

Next they are going to put a stop to cover bands and then the G chord. They will never take away my F#. I wont let them.

It's a slippery slope, indeed. One day you're downloading (or even creating) tab, and the next you're face down in the gutter.

  • Beware of Tabs!!!

These tab dealers are all the same.. and they always have the same line..

    \"First ones free kid\"

Before you know it you're hooked..

    See Ya,
    Tal
  • I dont see there being a time in the near future where you couldnt find a tab you wanted. The fact that they are even trying sucks. Most of what people want is top 40 so the artist has already banked a little, so whats it hurt if someone wants to learn the song. Deja vu from the napster days, the vibe it gives me anyway. When Lars Girlrich killed my impression of metallica (some kind of monsters' shrink sessions installed the tombstone)
Sure i would want all i could get out of something i published, but this is just greed. Imagine you wrote a song and find out some kid got jail time for trying to learn it. Friggin rediculous.
  • i think its very stupid - its very close to stopping people from playing other people's songs at all! you'll get arrrested for working out MOP by ear soon.

having said that - ive only bought official tab books - because i get frustrated when i find stuff on the net that is incomplete and innacurate - i normally end up learning by ear = wrong, no doubt - but probably better for me in the long run.
  • ASCAP, MPA.. what they miss is the fact that it leads people to buy the artists songs, Cd's etc. Most of those songbooks are as wrong as most of the tabs anyway.

I guess it won't be long until we all get arrested for singing Christmas Carols without proper permissions. After that, you'll have to pay royalties to sing church hymns...
  • We buy royalties from publishers a year at a time at our church, and we are not allowed to copy the music. It just gives us the ok to play the songs..

    Merry Christmas
  • Before you know it , amp modeling and any sound the GNX puts out that sounds like any artist will be banned. We will all have to play originals.
No more generic drinks, food, etc ... AHHHHHH!
    try this site http://www.midi-tab.com/a-k.htm
  • Next will be midi files around the internet! NOOO!!!
