In search of decent tone...with GNX4 can you guys test

I've been trying like crazy to get a good sound from my GNX4.

Can you guys give it a listen and tell me what you think?

I'm not recording an album or anything and have no plans too but what I do need is a good tone to come out of this thing in order to make clickable sound objects for something I'm working on.....I think I loose some tone in the encoding in order to import it into Flash.

Anyway the Link is: http://guitarlogix.com/logix/?CMT

Any feedback you guys can give on my current tone would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Are your speaker compensation switches on? Look on the rear of the unit. they must be on. Go to the site in my signature for vid tutorials on how to tweak the GNX.
  • When you record (digitally, USB or CF) on GNX4, you are recording an uncompressed audio stream, which is basically a WAV file (24-bit/44.1kHz at the most). When you encode it into another sound format (such as MP3 or whatever you use for Flash), the resolution and sampling rate will come down significantly. So yes, you will lose some of the tone.

Try using less compression and less amp model gain in your patch to reduce the tone loss due to the encoding.

G3456 tutorials on mfxsupermodels.com and mtprosound.com provide a wealth of information on tweaking for both live and studio patches, as well as information on amp model customization.
  • Ok...thanks....I'm going to mess around for a while and do some reading....I'll repost what I come up with so you guys can tell me if you hear a difference or not.

I knew I was losing some due to Flash but I just didnt know how to overcome it........Going to play around with the compression and gain to see if that helps.

Thanks again for the help guys.... I sure appreciate it.

    yeah they are on....

Are you sure the XLR speaker compensation is on?
Another thing to check is levels, are you sure your recording is not saturating in your digital track?
  • yeah Xlr's are on too.

I'm pretty sure it's encoding it to flash that is making me loose \"Something\"

Anyway there is another clip posted up there now ....can you guys re-check/listen?

It's sounds better to me but what do you guys think?

    the link again is...

  • Warlock,

I listened to both tracks, and the second one might be a little clearer than the first, but I really can't be sure because it's late at night and I'm listening to it through a set of cheap headphones hooked up to the computer.

I'm having similar problems as you are. I've only tried laying down one track: a finger-picked rythm for a ballad. It came back without most of the \"brightness\" I heard when I was playing it.

Some of the clips I've heard here is beautifully sharp and clear, tone wise. So I know it's possible. I have yet to discover the secret, however.

So I'm watching your thread with interest, and trying to pick up on the advice you receive. If you discover any ways to make the sound come back less muddy, please let us know.

I take it that's the second of the two links, right? Which tutorial on that page is the one about tweaking the G4, please?

Nice metal piece on the intro page, BTW. I sat there for a while just listening to it before I went in looking for the G4 info. ;-)

    Thanks in advance,

  • AlbertA,

Just now discovering your website. Looks like a lot of good info there on the GNX4. Will be spending some time there, learning. Already added it to my Favorites file. Thanks for the effort. It is appreciated.

  • well I have another one posted up there at the same link again.....
what do you think about it now?
  • I dig the tone... Nice chops too by the way... Can't wait to hear some fully recorded stuff.. Have a hunch it'll kick purple elephant... 8)

    See Ya,
    Tal
  • wow Tal you really dig it???! If so, you'd be the first one.....

Some fully recorded stuff will come later as soon as I am happy with my tone...but my main goal really is to get a good tone for some things I intend to do in Flash.

Anyway thanks for the compliments.....they are much appreciated...thanks for taking the time to listen....

very nice licks dude and I like the tone your getting now. You have a Malmsteen/Rhoads/Impelliterri feel to your playing which are some of my fav Guitar Gods so I hope you post up a complete jam soon and keep hunting for your tone man I think your on the right track.

    Peace Out;

  • Wow thats uplifting to hear! Thanks for the supreme kind words SydeKik!

I will definately be doing full blown tracks in the future after I get some things worked out and put the finishing touches on my \"web project\"......which is a huge task to do alone because of the magnitude of things that it encompasses all related to guitar in software form and video....that will be 99% free for everyone :)

I might end up taking a break from all the development and coding too though and do about 5 songs and other stuff because ultimately that is what I would rather be doing and I am feeling like scratching that itch.

Because you guys have been so helpful.......
If you need help with scales or want to brush up and want a free sneak preview of one of my main courses let me know :)

Never the less because of your guy's help and input I feel I'm at least making ground .....thanks again!
