Rate my guitar!

I probably won't get any replies as usual but i'll try anyways.

Its an IC400 aka Iceman

I've had it for almost a year now. I don't know if im happy with it. It plays good and it's one of the coolest looking axes I had ever seen, but I might have been able to get a better guitar for the same price. I payed $400 which is a good deal. Ive seen used IC400's for $600/700 on Ebay. Nothing special about them, same pickups and everything. I have no complaints about it, but I feel I could have gotten better. I always feel that way when I spend lots of money.

What do you think? Has anyone tried one?

It's the same guitar as Daron Malakian, Chad Ginsburg, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and a few other famous guitarists(Daron plays the IC300, Chad plays the IC400, not sure about the others). I didn't even know that until after I bought it so I guess that makes me like it better.

While we're on the subject of rating my gear, has anyone tried the Crate FXT120? What do you think about it? I feel the same way about my amp as I do my guitar lol. I need to do more research before I spend anymore money on gear.

The only thing I don't really like about the Icemen is the protrusion on the bottom side of the upper frets. Mostly for mechanical considerations, such as holding it while sitting down (I use a foot stool). As far as sound and playability, it's similar to other Ibanez models. Sustain is probably better than some of the lighter models, and the neck is just as playable judging from the construction.

I had one of the earlier Crates like that (GFX-112 with DSP). It never sounded great to my ears, but useable. I can understand why you might feel the way you do, but in the end it didn't make a difference as it was my only option at the time - both financially and in terms of space availability. It did get some decent sounds every once in a while. DSP was ok for live usage, although you have to run back and twist the knob to change effects.

However, for your sake, I certainly hope Crate has improved some other issues I had with my mode. What I found worse than the sound was the craftsmanship: knobs kept crackling, handle broke, the bolts from the handle fell into internal amp components and shorted the thing out, footswitch kept breaking (last Crate I saw along those lines used same one - pain), and there were numerous other problems I can't even remember now. None of their service centers ever honor the warranty.

Before getting it I read the reviews out at the time: most were pretty good, highlighting along the lines of \"it fell out of my truck and has been working for two years since\". Mine was on a sporadic gigging schedule, and generally traveled inside a station wagon. Warranty was 5 years, so that seemed ok to me at the time - but they stopped honoring it after one. A few years ago I threw that thing away, and didn't even salvage for parts. Cleaning out garage, bulk pickup day - all made sense somehow.
I need to do more research before I spend anymore money on gear.

You know it's funny how sometimes you say that, but then it doesn't happen. :? Then you just end up having a little bit of everything, nothing wrong with that right?
  • The thing I dont like about the Iceman is the pickups. They have too much bass to them. But that can sometimes be a good thing. I did alot of research before I got it. From what I read off the internet, its the best Ibanez guitar for the price. I should have waited, I found a 2005 edition with a crazy painting on it painted by the guy who made the special effects for the Alien movies. Ill post a picture later.

I havent done much research on my Crate amp. My friend had an amp simular to it and at the time I loved the sound. The only difference between our amps is mines a newer version, the shape is different but they sound the same, and mine has more effects and a tuner built in.Its good for practicing but not the best for showing off

My amp sounds pretty good at high levels but sometimes it sounds like the speakers about to blow up. Maybe next time ill get myself a PA. Guitar3456 recomended one to me that alot of people had success when connecting their GNX to it. Or I might get a tube amp or something. I wont get it anytime soon, but when I do, ill be sure to let you guys know so I can get some opinions.

Thanks for your reply Iliace
