free dxi plugins?

wheres a good place to get some decent quality dxi instrument plugins for recording with protracks? alternatively, is there some relatively inexpensive software out there?

im looking for some symphonic instruments, as well as some cool synth sounds like van halen's jump.

  • Hey Smeg,

As a rule of thumb, be cautious when using free DXi or VST plugins. Some have poor code and may not work very well with or screw up your recording application software. Make sure to create a restore point before you install free DXi's and VST's...

Does not mean that all are bad. Some work quite well. I think Cakewalk had an analog synth plugin out there for free that works perfect with Sonar (Triangle 2 or something along that line) and will definitely give you that VH \"Jump\" sound. Only drawback is that it is not polyphonic :( But there are ways around that using a little recording creativity. I tried a free DXi Juno2 synth that did not work at all with Sonar and had a pain in the a$$ to remove it from my system!!!

    Just be careful :)

  • OK - so can anyone suggest a reasonably priced, good quality soft synth with the basic instruments for use with ProTracks?

Does Sonar 3 or 4 include all this? Is it worth upgrading?

Also, what are some good soundcards with good quality MIDI instruments that I could use to record into PTP?
  • Hey Smeg,

Here is a link to an excellent site with LOTS of free and/or inexpensive plugins.
