Tal's lastet Tune \"Spartacus Variations\"

You never know where you get your inspiration some time..Watching the old move \"Spartacus\" on TV the other day. Those three notes at the beginning of the piece e, b, g#. Had me humming them over and over. At the end of the movie I noticed the great jazz pianist Bill Evans wrote the score. 8)

I took those three notes and started doing improvisations (variations) on them. The result is the Spartacus Variations.. Tune is pretty much straight up jazz with a 50's beatnik style in places.. Tune is also 3.5 megs in length and runs about 3 and 1/2 minutes in length. My first attempt at bass, rhythm, and lead with a midi drummer..
Go ahead and critque on this thead. Am open to suggestions..

You never know when inspiration will hit you. Was cutting the lead with ODannyboy for \"Blue City\" when those three notes just started rattling around in my head....

I'd also like to take this time to thank you guys who have given me response and critiques on my previous efforts and also to answer a few questions that were posed in those threads...

Thanks to c4r7, ODB, Archon, Southerocker, Granitehead, M_R_O, bbreland, and partch, dalexander, Dr.Fonk and many others.. If I missed somebody who critiqued one of my works I truly apologize... :D

Archon asked in one of his posts how I come up with some of my stuff...

Some things come to me like this tune which I described above. Others I get the changes down and then put together a lead on top such as \"Got Chops\" and \"Rockabilly Lullabye\". Others I just get a neat melody stuck in my head like \"Dreamland\" and \"Gypsy Blues\" and then come up with the changes.

My first few posts I have to pretty much discount. Just got hung up with playing again after my 25 year lay off and the ability to record on the fly with my GNX.

Boy was I pumped back then and still am with the GNX4....

The difference is that now I realize that these recordings are forever so I'm super picky about the final recording. Just ask ODB about \"Blue City\". I think I sent him 3 different version of the lead on that tune before I was happy enough for him to mix it...

Really have had a lot of fun with you guys and hope to hear from you on this thead about the \"Spartacus Variations\" or anything else.. :D

See Ya,
Tal

  • Hi Tal

This song is beautiful. I believe you have a strong sense for making sweet melodies. Your Chord Playing is amazing too, as heard on all of your songs, especially on Dreamland.

    You're truly gifted.

I'm looking forward hearing your next tune.

    cheers
    the doc
  • Thanks for all the compliments guys... :o

I really like jazz and that's where I was headed with this piece and from your comments I guess I kinda got there. :D

As time goes by I find myself playing with different styles and that nice mellow jazz sound was what I was shooting for with this piece. 8)

All of my pieces so far that I have posted seem to have a different style for each piece. Didn't set out intentionally to do it. Just the way the muse hit me at the time while I was composing. :?

In my \"Messing Around\" piece I was just trying to be accurate technique wise. In \"Old School\" I was looking for that good old country style. In \"Got Chops\" I was shooting for more of a classical style. In \"Mideast Speed Bump\" as well as \"Attack of the Major Ninths\" was going after that modern jazz sound. More so in the Attack piece. \"Rockabilly Lullabye\" is one of my favorites. Was going for a smooth Blues style..

Was a real pleasure to work with ODB on \"Blue City\" to practice and hopefully getting my Rock chops up to snuff... Hard not to play decent when you got a talent like ODB working with you...

My personal two favorite tunes I have recorded so far have been \"DreamLand\" and \"Gypsy Blues\". If you enjoy \"Spartacus Variations\" and you haven't heard those tunes you might enjoy them as well. \"Gypsy Blues\" is posted in reveiew section of the forum with the title \"Spooky Halloween Music for the group.. 8)

I have left off 3 tunes that I'm not too happy with that I have posted. I like the tunes just didn't like the execution on my part. They are \"Shreddin for Steve W\", \"MIsty\" and \"Blues in A\" . All three are nice concepts, I just sucked on the execution.. Possibly a remake one day... Especially for \"Steve W\". Dedicated it to my old drummer who died many years ago under violent circumstances and I owe it to him to do a hell of a lot better job than I did.

Thanks for all the compliments and constructive critisism offered by you guys on this and all my other posts.

A special thanks to the Admin cats here as well. I don't know if you guys have noticed or not but ANYTIME anyone has a technical question on this forum. AlbertA, or GNXJammer, or Guitar 3456 is Johnny on the spot. I'm talking about an answer within 24 hours. USUALLY within an HOUR.. Great job guys..

    Thanks and have fun,
    See Ya,
    Tal
