Few points of help for new user?

Just picked a GNX4 up thsi weekend, haven't had time to mess with it, skimmed the manaul...All in good time.
But, possibly you could help with a few brief ?'s....
I assumed it had a built in tuner, but I can't find it.
Also, when trying to download the sound files on here, I can't...The gp4?'s Do I need to install the software that came with the unit to do so?
I hadn't really planned to use any of it or witrh the computer, but from what I have been reading on here, it makes it a lot easier to edit, etc.
I have played for 21 years and am fairly literate with digital effects and analog recording, but software and digital/computer editing,e tc is a little intimidating :>) Plus, I have an old computer and slow connection
Any links or things I can look at that might ease my pain? I have looked at the tutuorials and such.
Thanks for the help and I hope I like the club.

  • im not a GNX4 owner but i try to be helpful (when im not trying to be annoying).....

slow connection doesnt matter - i use 56k dial up - just means slow to upload and download mp3s, patch downloads arent a problem as they are very small files (couple of KBs). Also i work for a Broadband ISP = more trouble than its worth unless you are into online gaming or peer to peer (ie Porn) or downloading films (ie Porn) etc..

Yep! i think you may run into problems with Pro tracks is your pc is very old - but its worth having a go = its basically a digital 4 track recorder = very simple, looks imtimidating but is actullay a breeze (plus you get 16 tracks not 4!) all you need to know is how to arm a track to record. how to playback and where the mixer view (console view) is so you can export the file as a .wav/.mp3 etc.. all the other knobs and buttons are just helpful but not strictly necessary.

Ex-Edit = you NEED this! that way you can download all the GNX4 patches as a zip file and save to your hardrive, also patch editing is - as you say - a breeze.

the tuner = if you look at the foot pedals on the GNX you will see written between two of them \"Tuner\" if you hold down both pedals at the same time you will go into tuner mode.

  • Hey man, thanks for the snappy reply! All of it makes sense!
I plan to tacle it one thing at a time, i.e. editing guitar/effects a little, then into the drums, then the recording aspect. Not worried at all about losing inspitation on the fly:>)

Wodnering, I believe I only have usb 1, not 1.1, wonder it that will work?
I appreciate any and all help.

Besides that, it also lets you edit \"hidden\" parameters, such as high/low setting on MetalZone stompbox; rotary speaker crossover frequency; various pan settings (for mod and delay sections); waveforms for chorus/flanger; etc. You can technically edit them on the GNX in standalone mode, but it's so tedious that you're better off getting your PC to cooperate  It really makes perfect sense once you get it up and running.

  • the GNX will work with USB 1.1 - ivbe never tried it though = not sure how cool it works.

you can get a usb2 card for like £2 from www.ebuyer.com
  • USB 1.1 is not a problem, that's what GNX uses. You don't need 2.0 per se. This is also the case with most dedicated audio interfaces that feature up to four mono inputs.

As CA explains in \"Power User's\" Guide, the bandwidth of USB 2.0 is inefficient to use for the little that a GNX needs.
  • oh - i thought in his online tutorials he said it was USB2 but compatible with USB 1 no problem?

it works anyway so no biggy :)

people are always shocked and amazed when they find out its usb and not firewire.
  • Thanks everyone, good info to know ahead of time!
For the record, I only have usb 1, not 1.1 (which is what it needs) but I found out it is a simple upgrade via the compute3r company...I think.
