Whats next from G3456? How bout this...

so i was thinking - if he can do all that cool spectrum analysis for the superseries, is it possible to do it for other instruments? could the soundwave of a piano or violin or even drums be replicated with the gnx warp?

now im sure alot of people are thinking  and admittedly i have no idea what im talking about, but this sure would be cool and way less confusing than midi!

waddaya say git?

  • working on some experimental things ala Korn and other out there stuff using the synth wave and lfo's.
  • Let me see if I get this straight...

For the superseries, did you basically sample the waveforms, run FFT analysis on the data, then convert the real and imaginary numbers from the FFT series to absolute numbers, next using this to get the frequency spectrum signature for the particular amp models that you sampled? Did you then tweak the GNX till it sounded \"ballparkish\" like the original amp and run the FFT and conversion to grequency spectrum plots and compare with the original amp, followed by the necessary tweaks to the patch and then a final check of the frequency spectrum to verify match as well as the audible test? Just curious :)

    Smegolas,

I will bow down and say I am not worthy to whoever can make authentic sounding piano sounds out of the GNX!!! Hell, that is even hard to do with a decent synthesizer!!! But you could probably get ballparkish with violin or any other string instrument... If anyone can do this I am sure G3456 is the man for the job :)

    Peace,

    Thomas
  • Hey guitar3456, Is it possible to analyze a guitar riff from a song, lets say Unchained from VH, and come up with a patch that mimics the song?
  • Or a sampling device \"lined in\" that would, be able to replicate guitar sounds heard from media and mimic in the GNX4.

or samples imported into Xedit... It think I'll install that software tonight.

i dont understand why you would want to do that? i have the hendrix pedal yet i use that for the old school marshall plexi sound , im not that bothered that if i want to play watchtower or little wing that it sounds the same . i will never sound like him anyway (see a dude called randy hanson at a trade show years ago and you would have swore he was playing a cd and miming to jim .. thats another story though)

i think that if you have a amp sound then you can tweak your style and sound from there , its like every artist patch i have ever had on any effect box they never sound that great and always need a tweek here and there to my personal tatse.

start with the amp model and then use your own skills to sound like what you are looking to sound like, if you want to sound like someone then the guitar and pickups help a heap to. if you are a van halen nut then just try replicating his rig and then work on the tone that come from you .

just my 2 cents here not saying that patchs are a bad thing i just think we all get to caught up in a certain idea that we need to sound like this and then we will rock . hey i guess thats the thing when you strip all the effects away then there is the guitarist sitting bare (not literally) in front of you . i just watched Barney Kessel and was blown away , not a touch of distortion , some reverb but mainly a clean sweet tone.

guitar 3456 makes lovly sounds (havent played with the gnx in about 3 months now) but then i think that unless you are able to craft these sounds into what you can do then you might as well just buy a ds1 and turn up the gain .

hope i dont upset anyone here just dont understand why everyone seems to have lost the thing i think most guitarists search for \"that sound\" i have a sound im very happy with and i went back to old gear to get it . i guess what i am saying is we all say jimi had a sound dave gilmore, ,,,,,, and on and on we can pick a guitarist by there sound(tone whatever ) thats what makes then stand out . isnt that what we should be trying to do ? develop our own stand out sounds. why mimic? parrots mimic

I totally understand what you are saying here but I'm in a cover band and the closer you get to the real thing, the more the audience enjoys. The plexi and EVH patches from MFX are AWESOME and I could probably tweek away to mimic the tones from the Fair Warning cd, but I'm a lazy bastard and was hoping someone else could do it for me!
The next big breakthrough in patches would vocal patches that mimic singers such as DLR, Brian Johnson, Robert Plant. Could you imagine that?

The question I had to guitar3456 was more or less a question to see if it is possible. If it is, that would be pretty cool.

The GNX4 was designed to mimic and thats what I'm using it for. I don't have my own sound because to be quite honest, I'm not a proffesional musician and don't need my own sound. I'm just having alot of fun being a parrot! Poli want a cracker?
  • Here Here! Bezial. I totally agree with your statements. I love having all these sounds at my fingertips ( GNX3000) but I still gravitate to a handful that satisfy ME.

Do the handful that you gravitate towards mimic a certain amp type. Isn't this one of the reasons you got the GNX4?
I think you guys may be missing something here. Why do you guys have the GNX4? Have none of you seen requests for certain patches towards certain songs? I'm very confused.

This thread started out asking if guitar3456 could get the gnx4 to mimic other sounds such as a violin. Maybe Smegolas should just go out and get a violin? :?

rotfl .. i would need a dam good vocal patch as im tone deaf lol i used to play with a guy that sang real bad to , dam a vocal patch that could make the tone deaf sing , halll e lu ya lol

2 million little elvisis all swinging there hips theres a sight lol
  • Your right, its not as funny as it sounds, as long as you could hold the basic tune, there is no reason why this cant happen in the future and also I agree 100% about getting the sound as close as possible helps the audience enjoy it more, I just played the entertainment centre in Brisbale Australia and I had patches that I did for myself to match tsome of the songs (not up to Guitar34556 standard) however playing the magic start on two of these songs with the right sound got them straight to the floor and pumping along and the sound engineer came to me and stated he hates mfx pedals as a rule but was blown away with the GNX4

off the point but still thought you may want to know

  • What's the point??? I'd really hate for my grandma to sound like Robert Plant through a Vocals Box!!! Yikes!!! No thanks...

Besides, keep in mind the human voice is the most recognizeable instrument we know ;) But sure, I bet it will be possible to do, but I would give no credit to anyone using the boxes to emulate famous singers. JMO... There are already some proggies out there where you can actually program female and male vocals to sing your lyrics (referring to Vocaloid Miriam, Lola and Leon). Pretty cools stuff, but will never replace the real thing :!:

    Just my 2¢

  • I have been using fx on my vocals as apposed to mixin it in later. The results have been great. I listened yesterday to Halford's LIVE RESURECTION and for the show all the FX was perfect. That is a aspiratin to sceam like Halford.

But no matter how much FX I use it is still me

he's right, we've gone way off topic. i just thought wouldnt it be cool to recreate certain sounds now that someone has really figured out how to do it. that would avoid having to buy a violin and spending years learning how to play it. but dude i would definately drop another $100 for the MFX Symphonic Series!!

I have seen him before, one of the few guitar gods.....Ranks right up there with Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Heb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith...

Over the years I came up with a pretty good rule of thumb about discovering who the real guitar greats are, and keep in mind I'm a Gibson man, so this may sound biased.... The following axiom is true..

\"If the Gibson Guitar company names a guitar after a person, said person is one hell of a player\"

All of the above players as well as Les Paul, Steve Howe, Alvin Lee and many more fall into that category....

There are some greats that don't play Gibson, Jimi mostly was a fender man, Django and others, but for one wanting a quick guide to great players use the above axiom.....

As for effects, my recent collaboration with O'DannyBoy on his newest tune \"Blue City\" has opened my eyes to all the effects and mixing techniques out there....

Just blown away with what O'DannyBoy can do with a mixer to make an old wore out jazzer like me sound good...

I'm really old school and all the effects I had when I played were reverb, tremelo, wah wah, fuzz, and preamps to overdirive the amp but keep the volume low...Recording was all analog, in sound proof rooms with reel to reel tapes...

After my long layoff I still had the old school mind set, but after working with ODannyboy I have finally come around....Can't say I'm any good at mixing, or effects but I'm definitely willing to learn now....

  • well if G3456 does get round to the GNX3K (BTW - im very envious, what a way to make your money!!! you is a genius dood! i gotta go do customer service to pay my way = yuch!) i would very much like a patch based on a Laney Supergroup 100Watt amplifier and its corresponding 4x12 cabinet - perhaps then i can get a 1961 Gibson SG Custom and some form of treble booster (or would boosting the presence suffice??) - oh! and a talent transplant of course, and maybe, just maybe, one day i can realise my childhood dream of sounding like Tony Iommi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hurrah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW dig the new avatar TLF
