sounds better than my version, thats for sure. I really like your take on the solo, nice way to put your on style to it. And the sound you use for the clean part is great, maybe you can post that, I wouldn't mind using it.

Also did you write the drums yourself?

Thank's for the compliment. It's a lot coming from you, I've heard your covers and they sound quite good also. I specially liked Fuel and The Unforgiven. You're right, I had not posted the patch for the clean part. But I just did. Here's the link:

Like I say in the description, the idea is to record one track with the acoustic amp and another one with the Digitech Warm Clean amp. Both with stereo Chorus.

Thanks, it's nice to have such success on my first try. I must say the principal responsible for this is the GNX3K. It's amazing how it sounds so well with my cheap ($70) electric guitar.

Nice tone Zambrana... reading your post I have a question. I have to say I never ever thought of doing this, and I think you said you did. How did you record just the green amp, then go back and record the red amp? I am thinking you turned everything down on one of them, to record the other... am I right?

If your're talking about the clean part of the song, what I did is basically have the same configuration but change the amp model. Actually what I did is take the acoustic amp model, record one track with it (stereo) and then change just the amp model to Digitech Warm Clean, without changing the other efects or parameters of the patch. Then I recorded the same riff as before, on a diferent track of course (stereo again). So, the two tracks, when mixed together, sound really cool.

I use different tracks to have more control on the volume level of the acoustic guitar relative to the warm clean guitar.

I changed only the amp model so that the only difference in the sound would come from that and not from having, say, more treble on one of the models, or from changing the effects like the chorus (which contributes a lot to the sound). This makes it sound more consistent, not like when you're with your band and the other guitarrist uses different equipment and the overall sound is maybe not as good as if you both sounded the same. I guess it depends on what you like, and what works well with the song.

If you're talking about the distorted part, well it's the same patch during the whole song; even during the solo, in which the only difference is the use of the Wah pedal.

Something I do that has worked well to have a nice sound when exporting to mp3 is to make the volume as high as possible (keeping the relative volumes of the different tracks the same of course) and making a file of 96 Kbps. I don't know why but the 144 Kbps mp3s sound noisy. I used this again on a first try of Seek and Destroy and it worked well again.

i see their point about the phaser effects but other than that your tone is bang on - much better than i could ever do - the way they talk youd think it was the worst sound in the universe!!

Wow! Now that's a tough group of critics. It reminds me of Simon Cowell though, it's easy being a critic when you're not showing how you sing or play. It's interesting how they don't show good examples of what a \"good\" MetallicA patch sounds like.

I may agree in that I make heavy use of the chorus, but no phaser. The truth is I haven't been able to have that stereo sound without the chorus. My playing is sloppy yes, but then again I 'm not doing this to sound perfectly like MetallicA, just close enough to make me feel really good about myself. Besides, if you listen to \"Saint Anger\", you'll notice they're not playing as clean as before. I guess they like to sound rawer now. Well, at least they didn't talk trash about the solo.

I agree that the mp3 encoding plays a large role in this. If I try making it sound any better, the file just gets too large.

Thank you for showing me this. I guess I can do better next time. In any case, my opinion is that we post patches not just to show how awesome we sound, but to give others the chance to improve what we've done. Us economists call it knowledge spillover. I'm hoping someone will do better than me and I'll use his patch after that.

All of this makes me wonder one thing though: What the hell does MetallicA use to get their sound? I saw Jaymz in \"Some Kind of Monster\" using this huge black board. It looks like he uses just the sound from the amp, but I'm not so sure. Kirk is still a mistery to me.

I'll post most of this message in their website, see what thay have to say.

they just want to hate the GNX cos they want to think the pod is best

why they cant just get both or accept that both have good points and bad points i do not know - but to say your patch sounded awful??? thats just BS.

Thanks man. The truth is when I was deciding waht to buy I checked the Line 6 web page and didn't really like their samples. But then I came to digitech and heard what the members had posted and I was stunned. Some were not that good of course, but others were just amazing.

I like our amp models and the fact that if you tweak long enough, you can get really close to the real sound.

I still thank you for the posting though. Assuming everyting is just perfect is not good if I want to improve.

I thoroughly enjoyed your take on that song. I have NOTHING critical to say about it. The tones work great for the song. I could care less if it's 100% authentic to the CD. I doubt Metallica sounds identical to their CD's live...

And things get totally worked over in the studio - so don't fret (pun intended). Your version is \"teh r0xx0r\". I love how saturated and intense the tones are. No complaints.

The gang at the Line 6 POD board are overly critical. They even seem to go after folks who jump ship.

I was thinking of the same \"simon cowell\" concept this morning as I read over there... yikes.

So anyway - keep rockin' man. You got chops and an good ear for tone! 8)

BTW Line 6 people i now have a machine gun hohoho - no sorry i meant to say i now have the toneport and it IS a quality product but the GNX3k amps are just better, simple as that - so deal with it and get on with the rest of your lives :twisted:

i do hear a digital edge when recording the GNX3k through USB though - ill try through the soundcard or micing up some speakers instead i think.

BTW - someone at the Line 6 board JUST posted his attempt to show how \"superior\" the XTL is by recording some metallica riff too... in that same thread as your tune zamb.

Um... his version is okay... but nowhere near as dimensional and colorful as yours. The XTL clip still has that plunky, flat feel to it... to me. I don't get it...why do they think that's better somehow?

But I'm about done over there ... the POD forum is beginning to leave me a little flat too... bummer.

Hey man, thanks for your replies. It kind of bummed me to read their complaints. I guess they're trying to \"talk\" their way into something we \"play\" our way here at Digitech. And I'm not saying that my recording cannot be improved, because it can, but all they do is talk.
