I've had a PS-4 performer for about 5 years, it's always worked for me (according to some, I make it sound a lot like a Strat when I try). I like the fact that there's a single-coil in the middle but a humbucker at bridge and neck (Dinkys have single-coil at neck). The only modification that I have is an SH-12 in the bridge position instead of the stock pickup... awesome for saturated leads.
I second the RR3 if you like the V shape. Though I want to replace the pickups in mine. Very nice guitar for the money.
I am a Jackson fan as well. Owning a RR3 and a USA SL-1.
I would however consider the ESP LTD MH line. I have a MH-400 and its the best guitar I have seen for $630. Look at the MH-250 ($455) for the price you are in. Or the MH-400NT / MH-250NT if you dont need a trem.

P.S. I'd personally keep away from the JS series. Not saying they are bad, but that price point makes me nervious.

No, not all of them do. I play a guitar similar to the DX10 and it has two humbuckers. Infact the guitar I sent the link for has two humbuckers.
I replaced my bridge pickup too. I put a Dimebucker in it. I like it alot.
