Adobe Audition

I just happened across this software, started reading the PDF's, watching the vids, etc, and Im really taken with it. I was planning on upgrading to a more equipt version of sonar untill this caught my attention. Any of you guys familiar with it, know any major pro's or con's I should be aware of, and hows it perform compared to Sonar ? I read alot about its mastering capabilities but am concerned about, and have found little info on midi authoring (for drums) and general recording capabilities.

  • I use Audition. It used to be called Cool Edit Pro before Adobe bought the rights from Syntrillium and renamed it Audition. If you haven't already I would try the demo out. It has a simple user interface with 3 main tabbed editing windows which are:

Edit view: I use this mainly for Audio restoration as Audition has a nice set of restore tools in it.

MultiTrack View: up to 128 channels available for recording. Pretty straight forward interface here and not at all confusing.

CD Project View: I don't think I have ever used this tab yet so no comment here :-)

This is a link to a little piece I recorded directly from my GNX4 into Audition via USB. Pretty much just clicked record and started jammin with very little if any mixdown editing on this piece.

Can use Directx and VST plug-ins. About the only one I use right now is the BBE Sonc Maximizer Plug-In. Which wans't used on the above recorded clip.

Any questions you might have about the software feel free to ask and I will try to answer hehe.

    Hope this helps ya some.

Sydekik, that's 'Into the Flames', right? Nice tune and tone! What patch did you use?

  • can i ask what the sonic maximser is? ive heard about it a lot! is this a plug in version of a real piece of equipment? what does it do? is it a power amp or something?

    questions questions
  • I use Audition exclusively for recording audio and cleaning up old tapes and albums. I have Sonar P4 also, but I use it for MIDI work only.
I started with Cool Edit and I'm so used to it now for my audio work, that I stuck with it. Audition is geared more for semi-pros also working with video, but its recording features do a great job, especially when paired with Ozone mastering or Sonic Maximizer plug-ins.
Archon: The Maximizer started as a hardware unit, (still is), and graduated to plug in status. Basically, it seperates your high and low frequencies before it outputs to your speakers, resulting in higher definition. I use a BBE 462 hardware unit live and for recording. About 150 to 200 $. HTH

Here is a link that will probably be able to tell you more info than I can on the Sonic Maximizer. I use it in final production to \"clean\" up the sound. It seems to make the whole recording sound better, crisper.

  • Sonic maximizer is a plug in and a rack piece. So it is both and I have and use both.
  • Terranaut, is it possible to compose drumlines or edit beats on auditon? If so why do you perfer sonar over audition for midi?
  • I'm still a Midi novice, but Sonar seems much better equipped to handle midi tracks over Audition. Audition is Midi capable, but I really haven't tried anything with it. There are peeps on this forum that amaze me with what they do with with Midi drumltracks on Sonar. I hope to catch up someday.
  • I USE AUDITION AND IT IS SIMPLY AWESOME!!
