SONAR’s pristine 64-bit audio engine, seamless and accessible even on 32-bit computers, sets new standards for digital mixing. In addition, SONAR 5 introduces ground-breaking advances in RAM and native processing power on systems running Windows XP x64 Edition.
  • It looks good, I am going for it after the first or second patch, just like I did with Sonar 1,2,3, and 4.

I will read on the Sonar Forum just how well it works then when I think it is stable I will order my upgrade.
  • Finally, Native VST support. About time. No more wrappers around VSTs!!!!
  • I WILL NOT UPGRADE....I WILL NOT UPGRADE....I WILL NOT UPGRADE....

Just reminding myself I'm very happy with my very stable sixteen track system with version 4.

  • MartinTele, now it seems pretty obvious that you are not going to upgrade, are you?
What surprises me is how often Cakewalk comes with new version - it is not so long since version 4 was a novelty. I hope it's not going to be at cost of quality. There always seem to be some bugs in there (as in case of any software), hope they won't be numerous this time. The VST native support is good news, I think it was high time, really. I would love to have a full-feautered audio editor in Sonar, that would mae things much easier.

Isn't pretty full featured? Or do you mean something Sound Forge like?

Good news about the native VST compatability.. Woo hoo!
  • Mikeedge I believe was talkin about the fact you can only edit audio by 3dbs up or 3 dbs down. If they did not fix that feature there should be a boycott. So simple to fix but they won't.

Well it's not really a fix is it? It's more of introducing more mastering features..

Now wouldn't that be great, the editing functions of sound forge combined with the Multi-track, routing, MIDI and other nice things from Sonar... Oh well....

That's exactly what I meant. Maybe I'm a bit spoilt by using CoolEdit for so long, but I would very appreciate separate edit view in the style of Loop Construction View with fuctions such as Mute, Insert Silence, Reverse and especially ajust volume freely. I think that such a complex app as Sonar deserves something like that.

Your saying \"edit\" audio? You surely mean boost. In addition to the 3 dB cut or boost you can also use normalise. That's enough for me.

Why clutter up the software with extra parameters?

I wouldn't boycott Sonar over a minor feature. Heck just the ability to compose and print off my big band charts from Sonar was enough reason to buy the package. I'm quite happy with the powerful recording, editing, midi, sequencing capabilites.

  • Just don't get me wrong, I enjoy working with Sonar very much. For the vast majority of audio recording/mixing/mastering it's more than sufficient. Still, when I'm in need of effective destructive-editing, an external editor (CoolEdit in my case) is a necessity. It's not big deal, but I would prefer not having to start an external app when running Sonar. The fact that VST wrappers will not be necessary in Sonar 5 is much more important to me, though. :)
  • I just switched over to a mbox and pro tools after just a few days I am getting alot better results and the plugins seem so much more...\"deluxe/user friendly\" I dont know if thats the word but I am really digging it. :) 8) I was useing cakewalk products Sonar 1.3 as well as Pro tracks 2.2 and 3 and home studio 9. I just seem to be \"getting the idea  of recording editing and mixing\" much better with this new software. Its probably just me but whats the diffrence between the 2 in your opinions. Pro tools VS Cakewalk... what are the rest of youguys take on these 2 programs?

That's what I said when I switched from Pro logic to Sonar 2XL. Sonar 2 had a very good tutorial and I spent a couple hours going through it. After that I could do pretty much all I wanted.

I've seen the mbox stuff and it looks fantastic. Wish I had the money for it.

  • I have Sonar 5 PE and I have to say I really like the improvements they made. More effects, more soft synths, and many more things too many too list here. It will run Sonar 4 projects with no problem.
  • Southerocker, could you come with a short review of what you like/dislike about the new product? I'd be much obliged to you. Thanks!
  • I'm fairly new to Sonar. I've used Sonar 4 PE on only a couple songs so I still have alot to learn but from what I can tell so far, Sonar 5 PE is outstanding. I haven't had a single problem with it yet. It will load projects created using Sonar 4 PE. Some of the more used features such as track layers and piano roll view now have buttons conveniently placed on the (tracks view), if that's what it's called. Sorry again, not alot of experience here. Also the dB meter is placed horizontally unerneath the track instead of vertically to the right of it. There are also more soft synths and effects. I'm sure there are alot more new features that I haven't tapped into yet. It does come with an 8.6 MB 610 page pdf users guide that seems to be pretty detailed. Anyway, that's a quick review for it, I guess. If you have any specific questions about it, let me know and I'll try to answer them.
