Power on?

Do you guys leave your GNX4 plugged in all the time? I play at home almost all the time. I have noticed the power transformer gets warm. Even if I leave the GNX4 off.

Thanks

  • I asked this question a while ago, and I was told that it wouldnt ruin it but I unplug it anyways. That is, when I dont forget
  • There is a thermal fuse inside the transformer pack ( not repairable). It is designed to handle a good amount of current and will open based on the temperature it reaches. Beyond that..zoooink..no power. Like I said, the surge current I believe is around 2.6A. For a pedalboard, that's alot. So it would take a lot of heat to pop the TF. If you have a circuit in your house that lights vary when heaters, ac's, frig's, etc that's where I'd be careful. That means most likely you will get intermittent surges from the main panel source as these devices ( especially with compressors) turn on and off. If this is the case..unplug the transformer from the wall when you are done. Getting hot is normal... One guy at a show was playing and the power shut off and on real quick..the surge took the transformer out! HE could not use the GNX. If you play out frequently, I strongly recommend having a backup power supply. Variances in power sources at clubs are inevitably going to give you a problem.

Those little surge protectors from dime stores do not work. All those are is a multiplug with an MOV for noise/emi filters. They will NOT regulate your power. In that, 30 or so bucks for an extra power supply is a lot cheaper than a 400 dollar Furman Power Regulator!
  • Thanks guys.
Mike, good info on the thermal fuse. Bummer you cannot replace the unit, but it sounds like a fusable link we use to use in cars and such in the 80's. When popped they are gone. My home stuff is a combo, my HT and air compressor are on isolated circuits my bud ran for me. He checked the panel and said it was good for residential power. The only vary I get is when the wife runs the older vacuum. Sucker draws 16 amps on a 20 amp circuit. You see all the lights dim. I will take head here and make sure the GNX4 is off and I will add a backup power supply to my growing list of need. You know the GAS list :) I do use a surge, but you know how the thud storms are in this area. 99% of the time my stuff is off in thud storms and lightning. I feel an ounce of prevention here is worth in inconvience. I just play the acoustic in those conditions.

Mojo, I understand! I brain dumped last night and left the GNX4 and my Hot Rod Deluxe on last night. I was real tired and was going to come back and do a shut down. I came in this AM to do my morning pratice and both were still on. :( Oh well, tubes kept the room warm.
