R4 Hard Button Backlighting - Randomly On or Off?

Does anyone know how to control the R4's hard button backlighting? Of the five I've actually tested all five exhibited random backlight behavior.
The backlighting would turn on sometimes when the panel was active and other times it would not.
It would also turn on and turn off randomly in the midst of use.
Any explanations? None of the System Settings on the remote seem to address the backlighting specifically and the manual doesn't mention it at all.

Too bad the R4 still isn't IP firmware upgradeable.. I mean, will we always need to use the finicky USB interface for updates?
Now, I have to schedule trips to all of my R4 deployments to fix this annoying bug.
