just want to reconfirm
can we use standard access point from 3COM or NETGEAR
DLINK
instead of the WAP that comes with the panel.

Well, there is no WAP that comes with the panel
. But yes, you can use any brand WAP, it's standard 802.11B, and supports WEP and WPA. -

Thing to remember
When using a 3rd party WAP remember the algorithm they use to generate thieir encrypted hex keys may not be the same. So intead of using the 13 character ASCii key with with both, you will probably have to generate the hex key in one and hand copy it over to the other. -
We use Netgear in all of our installs and they work flawlessly

We've been using the OnQ inwall/ceiling WAPs. They are powered over ethernet and they can be installed in the drywall behind paintings/pictures.
